Vandals target Des Allemands flood control devices

Thirty-five yellow caution lights that were placed to alert motorists to HESCO baskets lining Bayou Des Allemands were removed and tossed into the bayou, according to parish officials.

Public Works discovered the incident on Tuesday morning. The sand-filled baskets were erected Friday to protect the area from possible storm surge in advance of Tropical Storm Bonnie and will remain in place until at least September.

Risk Manager Monique Granier said the $20-a-piece lights, with batteries removed, were tossed into the bayou.
The lights, where missing, are being replaced with red and white reflective tape to help make them more visible to motorists.

Officials have filed a report on the incident with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The parish is seeking any information in this case and will prosecute those found responsible.
