11 vehicles burglarized in Hahnville; GPS units, laptop, binoculars stolen
Thieves didn’t have to try too hard to get away with thousands of dollars in merchandise on June 12, targeting unlocked vehicles on River Park Drive in Hahnville, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
In all, 11 auto burglaries were reported on Sunday, and the thieves made off with merchandise that included GPS units, a laptop, a camera, fishing supplies, a pair of binoculars and an Internet router.
“The only vehicles entered by the perpetrators were unlocked, indicating that they were only looking for unlocked cars,” Sheriff Greg Champagne said. “I would urge everyone in Hahnville and everywhere to lock your vehicle and remove valuables from the inside.”
The recent string of vehicle break-ins comes two months after five vehicles in the Lakewood and Mimosa Park area were targeted. In that case, a witness reported a dark-colored vehicle following a person walking through the neighborhood. The thieves made off with cash and an iPod and four of the cars were unlocked at the time of the theft.
“Investigators have not made a determination of these incidents being related,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes said. “In crimes like this, criminals are looking for vehicles that are unlocked. They tend to target several vehicles in the area at a time.”
Though deputies had blocked off River Road at the intersection of River Park for two days last week due to the Dow vapor leak, Yoes said that does not appear to be a factor in the recent break-ins.
Yoes said vehicle owners can decrease the likelihood of being victimized by locking their vehicles, not leaving valuables in plain view and parking in well-lit areas.
