Train derailment forces evacuation of 15 homes

A train derailed at about 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning near a Destrehan neighborhood.

The derailment happened on the Canadian National Railroad south of the intersection of Becky Lane and Madewood Drive and forced officials to implement a 50-meter exclusion area, evacuating about 15 homes in the area as a precautionary measure, according to Renee Simpson, public information officer for the parish.

The train was carrying soybean oil and aniline, an oily poisonous chemical used to make dyes, plastics and some medicines.

“It is a volatile chemical. It is dangerous,” Simpson said.

State Police Hazmat confirmed there was no leak from any of the seven cars involved, Simpson said.

Simpson said no injuries were reported from the incident.

The railway is still investigating the cause of the derailment.

A road closure was implemented in the 100 block of Madewood Drive. The Landry School gym in Hahnville was available as a shelter for those evacuated.
