‘Stall buddies’ escape and survive one of the busiest highways in the U.S.

Drivers on U.S. Highway 90 were likely surprised to recently see two horses running on the roadside in Des Allemands.

They had escaped around 10 a.m. last Wednesday from the nearby Rock N Ranch (RNR) farm.

Just back from the dentist, Steve Naquin reached for his cell phone and saw numerous phone calls (two from the Sheriff’s Office), 33 text messages, two Facebook messages and a photograph of two horses running alongside the highway. Naquin recognized them because they are among the 50 horses boarded at his farm, which is also in Des Allemands.

St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. James Grimaldi said the horses escaped from their enclosure by accident.

Naquin explained the two are “stall buddies” and belong to the same owner, which might explain why the two escaped through a hole in the fence on the property, he said.

“The horses are fine,” Naquin said. “It was a big team effort. Everyone pitched in.”

It was fortunate they escaped in broad daylight with better visibility and less traffic on the highway, he said. But Naquin said their escape defied logic with them getting through the fence and crossing a ditch full of water to make it to the highway nearby.

“I have no clue why they wanted to get there so bad,” Naquin said. “They had been turned out about 9 or 9:30 a.m. The pasture has a lot more to offer. We feed them everyday.”

Naquin said it took teamwork to capture the horses, but everyone helped and they were safely recovered.

He thanked everyone on his Facebook page, “RNR would like to thank everyone involved in the awesome job getting the horse’s back safely and the fences repaired quickly.”
