St. Rose firefighters rescue horse trapped between trees

The St. Rose Fire Department got an unusual call last week.

A horse named Ghost, which belongs to Amber Melancon, got caught between two trees. Melancon’s dad is a volunteer fire fighter for St. Rose , so she knew as soon as she saw what happened that she needed to give the fire department a call.

“Upon arrival at 11304 River Road we discovered  a 21 year-old gelding named Ghost who had fallen from an embankment and had gotten stuck between two trees,” Fire Chief Larry Cochran said. “This is a slightly unusual incident. We are used to dealing with people, but this was still a rescue with the main goal of freeing the trapped victim swiftly but safely.”

A tranquilizer was given to the horse for the animal’s and the rescuer’s safety.  After 20 minutes, the firemen could safely place straps under the horse and lift his 900 plus pounds from the two trees and give Ghost the freedom he deserved.
