St. Charles school bus hit on Highway 90

A St. Charles Parish School bus was struck head-on by a car that went out of control about 2:30 p.m. Friday on U.S. 90 in Boutte.

Officials said four students and the bus driver were injured, but none of the injuries appeared to be serious.

The condition of the other driver was unknown.

According to St. Charles Parish Schools spokesman Regina McMillan, bus No. 410 was transporting 27 students home from Hahnville High School when the accident occurred.

“All 27 students were transported to the hospital to just to be checked out,” said McMillan. “I was told that the bus driver did an excellent job during the accident and prevented it from becoming a more serious situation.

“The children also did an outstanding job evacuating the school bus in a timely manner and remained calm.”

The bus was traveling east on the highway. The car was travelling west. The car apparently went out of control and crossed the median of the highway, hitting the bus.

The spokeswoman said the driver pulled the bus to the side of the road, where it went into a canal.

School officials, police and emergency medical workers were at the scene. The injured bus driver and students were taken to St. Charles Hospital in Luling.

Hahnville parents were sent telephone and email messages notifying them of the accident and that students might be delayed getting home because of traffic related to the accident.
