An approximately five-foot long alligator attacked and bit a St. Charles Parish deputy on Monday, as officers were attempting to help capture it after it wandered into the backyard of a Luling residence.
The officer, who was not identified by the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, suffered deep lacerations and punctures to his right arm. He was treated at University Medical Center and subsequently released, and is expected to make a full recovery, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cpl. James Grimaldi.
Officers on the scene were assisting a St. Charles Nuisance Animal Officer after the alligator wandered into the rear yard of a home on the 100 block of Evergreen Court. After using an animal catch pole to hold the alligator, a deputy attempted to tape the alligator so it could be safely relocated to the wild. As the deputy attempted to secure the alligator, the alligator pulled free from the deputy and bit him on his right arm.
A second deputy was able to hold the alligator preventing it from causing further injuries, as the alligator’s mouth was pried open to release the injured deputy’s arm.
