Smith is facing Bridges in District JOP race

Aleshia J. Smith is running for justice of the peace in District 1, a position that drew attention earlier this year when Henry Wolfe won the slot even after he was told not to run because of his age.

Wolfe, 72 at the time, earlier told the Herald-Guide that he believed the law would be overturned. But he was apparently appointed to fill the position until the special election to formally fill this position.

Smith, D-Hahnville, is facing opponent Edna Campbell Bridges, D-Hahnville, who was unavailable for comment as of press date.

The election primary is Oct. 24 and general election on Nov. 21.

Smith, 67, of Hahnville said she would bring JOP experience in this position, having held it from 1997 to 2008 prior to Wolfe.

“I want the position because it allows me to communicate with residents of my district legally,” she said. “That’s why I ran before. I want to give them justice they didn’t even know existed for them, such as small claims court.”

In addition to making marriages a little more than just “I do and you do,” Smith also wants to help arbitrate disputes to avoid conflicts where possible.

“Basically, I believe the legal system can work if we have people working that work for the majority,” she said. “I believe I’m the best person for the job because I sincerely care about the community being legally represented – that makes us all better citizens.”
