Several vehicles were broken into in the Willowdale area Tuesday night. Most of the vehicles were left unlocked and contained valuable items.
The thieves struck in the early morning hours and went quietly from automobile to automobile looking for unlocked vehicles.
According the to St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s office, these incidents are likely to occur again. Residents are urged to lock vehicle doors, take out all valuables and park in well-lit areas.
On July 21, Sheriff Greg Champagne issued a statement warning the public to be aware of the recent wave of thefts focusing on all terrain vehicles.
These ATV’s are being reported as stolen from easily accessible locations such as from under carports and inside unlocked garages.
According to the sheriff’s office, the incidents are usually occurring before dawn, however, some reports indicate that the crime was committed during daytime hours.
A recent incident of theft occurred at 105 Verdin Ln., Paradis, where a Honda 4-wheeler, valued at $8,500, was reported stolen.
Many citizens of the parish, who own these vehicles for legal purposes such as hunting, are urged to take all necessary precautions to prevent the theft of their property. Owners should keep the vehicles out of public view and keep a record of the vehicle’s serial numbers.
According to Sheriff Champagne, this information, along with the make and model of the vehicle, is essential to the recovery of stolen ATVs.
The sheriff’s office is convinced that many of the thefts are motivated by the vehicle’s easy portability and it’s considerable resale value on the black market in other parishes and states.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in connection with the transportation of these vehicles are asked to immediately call 911.
