SCP industry growth creates hundreds of permanent jobs

Learn how, where to apply for positions

With billions of dollars worth of projects on the horizon, St. Charles Parish companies will be hiring hundreds of new employees in the coming years.

Corey Faucheux, director of economic development for the parish, said that locals have a great opportunity to find employment at many of the local plants.

Included in the upcoming projects are a hydrogen plant project at Valero that will result in 70-100 permanent jobs, an ethylene cracker project at Dow that will create 100 new positions, construction of Ashton Manor Assisted Living Facility which will need 50 employees and construction of a 20-employee lab with Inspectorate America. All of these projects and more will also require thousands of temporary construction workers.

Faucheux said that residents looking for work should visit the businesses’ individual websites (listed at the end of this article) or utilize a huge resource available right in their back yard – the Business and Career Solutions Center on Paul Maillard Road in Luling.

“It is the one-stop job service office,” Faucheux said. “There are many, many resources there”

The center offers resume building, job coaching and a database of jobs from all over the region and state.

Annie Harmon, with the center, said that about 300 people visit the center each month and nine times out of 10 those who come in are unemployed residents looking for work.

“We help them prepare a resume, search the job bank and assist them in finding a job,” Harmon said.

Faucheux said that the center’s benefit is “two-fold” because the office also collects resumes to create a pool of applicants for when businesses come to them looking for a new employee.

Harmon said that anyone can come to the center and find job help, regardless of their talents or previous professions.

“From housekeepers to executives – the job bank lists it all,” she said.

The center is open from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. No appointment is necessary to visit the center, but applicants who are short on time can also get help online by visiting www.laworks.net. Residents can also search for a job at www.voshost.com.

Faucheux said that larger companies in town are very diligent about listing job opportunities on their own websites. He suggests checking these individual company websites on a regular basis to find job opportunities:

•Dow – www.dow.com/careers

•Monsanto – www.monsanto.com/careers

•Valero – www.valero.com/careers

•Shell – www.shell.us/home/content/usa/aboutshell/careers/professionals/how_to_apply

•Galata Chemicals – www.galatachemicals.com
