Scholarship will honor caring HHS librarian who passed away from cancer

Former Hahnville High School librarian Patricia Pitre hasn’t been forgotten since her recent passing, and the HHS community is banding together to ensure that remains the case forever.

The school is holding a shrimp boil Friday, Oct. 23 to raise money to establish a collegiate scholarship in the former faculty member’s name, “The Pat Pitre Memorial Scholarship.”

The plates will cost $12 each and include boiled shrimp, potatoes, corn and dip. There is a $10 plate minimum for delivery. Others may pick up orders at the school between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Pitre passed away in August following a battle with cancer. “She was here for the past 15 years, and she was such an integral part of our school,” HHS school office specialist Leslie Cooper said. “She loved the kids here and she stayed so involved in their lives.

“This year is the birth (of the project) and we’re going to see how much we can raise … we’d like to make it a couple of scholarships if funding allows.”

Cooper said the orders will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis and that only 750 plate lunches will be made. She said the school asks for orders to be placed no later than Friday, Oct. 16.

“We won’t turn down orders after that, but we’re only going up to that number (750),” she said.

Pitre, a Galliano native who resided in Cut Off, was well known for her enthusiasm and dedication to the students who have come and gone through Hahnville’s halls. She worked in her position at HHS for 15 years and was extremely well-liked by the rest of the school’s faculty and staff.

Her memory has been kept alive in a number of different ways at Hahnville. A disc reading “Pat”  adorns the helmets of the Tiger football players.

The recent “Pink Links” fundraiser — Pink Links is a non-profit organization that raises support and awareness for the fight against breast cancer — was held in her honor this year.

And before the biggest regular season football game of the season locally, Destrehan at Hahnville, a plaque was presented to Pitre’s family.

It read: The Administration, Faculty and Staff of Hahnville High School, along with St. Charles Parish Public Schools, presents this award to the family of Ms. Patricia “Pat” Pitre, to express our gratitude for her service, contributions, and dedication to Hahnville High School.

Pitre assisted students with their senior projects, setting up panel presentations as well as helping the students with their research in the library and helping them add media to their digital portfolios. She would also help those struggling with deadlines to make sure they didn’t fall behind on their projects.

She was in charge of organizing the school’s graduation ceremony.  She checked with each senior for the correct spelling of their name, set up appointments with Jostens for the seniors to order their supplies and organized and conducted the graduation practice.

Hahnville Principal Ken Oertling said while Pitre did not have children, she treated the students of Hahnville as if they were her own.

“She was so generous,” Oertling said. “She’s given money so students could attend their prom, she’s bought caps and gowns for graduation … she especially created relationships with our seniors. We’ve had senior classes dedicate a plaque to her in appreciation for what she did for them.

“Miss Pitre had a unique, Cajun personality. She was someone you could depend on.”

Orders may be emailed to drobin@stcharles.k12.la.us, and checks or order forms mailed to Hahnville High School, 200 Tiger Dr., Boutte, LA, 70039. Attn: Denise Robin. Checks should be payable to SCPSF — Pat Pitre Scholarship Fund.
