Residents evacuated, roads closed due to Norco chemical leak

NORCO – River Road has been closed between Washington Street and the Bonnet Carre Spillway on the East Bank due to an incident at a Dow’s Norco facility.

Dow has identified the substance as titanium tetrachloride which converts to hydrochloric acid. The substance, as a vapor, can cause eye and/or throat irritation.

A precautionary evacuation has been called for residents that live on Spruce Street, Honeysuckle, Wild Rose Drive and Fifth Street from the Spillway to Spruce Street in Norco until further notice. Those needing a place to evacuate can go to Eual J. Landry School next to the Courthouse in Hahnville.

Students at three schools in Norco will not report to classes this morning. They include Sacred Heart, Norco Elementary K-3 and Norco Elementary 4-6. In addition, an exclusion area immediately around the plant has been set up, bordered by the railroad tracks, Spruce Street, Fifth Street and the lower Spillway Guide Levee.
