R.K. Smith teacher charged with molesting student

Schools conducting internal investigation into charges

An R.K. Smith Middle School teacher has been arrested and charged with molesting a student.

Troy W. Quinn, 41, was arrested on Friday and charged with three counts of molestation and one count of indecent behavior with a juvenile.

Quinn is accused of having inappropriate contact with a 13-year-old student over an extended period of time from February through May of 2012. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office took Quinn into custody at his home in Gonzales.

St. Charles Parish Public Schools hired Quinn as a health and physical education teacher in 2010. Officials with the school system said they are looking into the matter and that more details will be available later.

“We are conducting an internal investigation as to the charges of the arrest and will take further action as is warranted by the investigation,” said Public Information Coordinator of Special Programs Regina McMillan.

The school system notified parents of the arrest Sunday night and encouraged them to contact the school if they had any concerns.

The St. Charles Sheriff’s Office provided a press release on the arrest, but would go into no further detail.

“We are going to go ahead and let the press release speak for itself,” Sheriff Greg Champagne said.

Quinn is being held at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center. Bond has been set at $200,000.
