Professional auto theft ring targets Chevy trucks, SUVs

4 vehicles stolen, 2 attempted thefts last week

An auto theft ring operating in St. Charles Parish is targeting Chevrolet trucks and SUVs that are five to 10 years old, according to Sheriff Greg Champagne.

Last Friday, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado was stolen from Mary Street in Norco, while a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer was taken from Longview Drive in Destrehan.

Over the next few days, similar vehicles were stolen from St. Rose. Champagne is confident that the thefts are related.

Last week there were also two attempted thefts of Chevrolet trucks and SUVs in the St. Rose area.

Champagne said the stolen vehicles are likely destined for “chop shops” or are transported out of the state or out of the country.

“The thieves are able to enter a locked truck and drive off within a couple of minutes,” he said.

The thefts and attempted thefts have all taken place early in the morning from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Deputies have used video surveillance gathered near the crime scenes to discover that the thieves are driving around in a midsize black sedan.

“We have unmarked detectives and deputies working during the late evening, early morning hours in attempt to apprehend these individuals,” Champagne said.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents should call 911.
