President-elect asks for moratorium on parish contracts

St. Charles Parish President-elect Matt Jewell is asking the Parish Council for a moratorium on parish contracts.

“As I transition into office, it is my understanding there are several contracts which are due to be executed or advertised to be bid,” Jewell states in his letter to the council. “It is my request that you please place a moratorium on the execution of any new contracts …” including public works or professional contracts.

As part of his transition into office, Jewell said these contracts would be administered by his administration and the budget passed for his first year in office.

“I believe it is essential that my administration and the new Parish Council be able to review and approve any such contracts for purposes of continuity, clarity and transparency,” he wrote.

On Friday, Jewell said the request is normal for an administration and council at the end of their terms to not enter into any large contracts before a new council and administration take over.

“These are projects that will be administered by my administration so it’d be more appropriate for them to happen by my administration,” he said. “And the new council should have a say so as well in these projects.”
