State police say that the woman who caused a wreck that led to the death of the aunt and uncle of San Francisco 49er Delanie Walker tested over the legal blood alcohol limit.
Alice Young, 42, and Bryan Young Sr., 54, both of California, were killed on I-10 over the Bonnet Carre Spillway on Monday on their return trip after witnessing the Super Bowl. According to state police, the Youngs had stopped their Nissan Altima on the shoulder of I-10 for unknown reasons. Nechole Thomas, 26, of Houston, Texas, was speeding when she ran her Mercedes C230 into the back of the Youngs’ vehicle.
Both cars caught on fire, but Thomas was able to escape with minor injuries. The Youngs were discovered in their car after the fire was extinguished and were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Thomas was booked into the Nelson Coleman Correction Center on two counts of vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless operation. Authorities say her blood alcohol was over the legal limit and that a drug test is still pending.
Thomas’ bail has been set at $300,000.
“Once again, the presence of poor decisions such as driving while impaired and speeding proved to be a fatal combination. Making these decisions while behind the wheel often leads to serious injuries and deaths every day in our state,” Trooper Melissa Matey said. “Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death.”
