Police search for alleged kidnapper who is on the loose in Paradis

St. Charles Parish sheriff’s deputies are searching for a man who kidnapped his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint this morning before the car they were traveling in crashed near the Paradis Library on Old Spanish Trail.

The victim, who Sheriff Greg Champagne said had been beaten, was able to flee to the Paradis Library. Deputies are still searching for her alleged abductor, 22-year-old Jerry Celestine.

Celestine, described as 5-foot-10 with dreadlocks and weighing 150 pounds, is believed to be armed with a gun.

Champagne said that residents in the area north of Highway 90 in Paradis should remain in their homes and call 911 if they see anyone matching Celestine’s appearance. He was wearing a blue shirt and grey jogging pants.

At about 10 a.m., police rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. A SWAT team apparently entered a neighboring residence in search of Celestine, who was soon determined to be at large.
