Children removed after drug bust in St. Rose
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office investigation is continuing into how a white powder later identified as methamphetamine got into a second-grader’s school bag. The discovery came last Thursday, shortly after the Sheriff’s Office had also arrested the child’s mother, Christina Cherry, 25, and her live-in boyfriend, Kevin Richardson, 24, both of 147 Johnston St. in St. Rose. Both have been charged with possession and intent to distribute meth.
The student found a bag containing a baggie with a small amount of white substance inside a pack of tissues and presented it to the teacher, who immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies reported to a private school and later determined the white substance was meth.
“It is believed that the juvenile may have taken the tissue pack from home, weeks prior to the incident, not realizing what contents were inside,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes said the two incidents are being investigated separately, which could result in additional charges.
But, on the same day the child presented what turned out to be meth, Cherry was charged with possession of methamphetamine, obstruction of justice and two counts of illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of juveniles.
Richardson was charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of juveniles.
Since November, the two had been investigated by the Sheriff’s Office based on a tip from a confidential informant about suspected drug activity at the residence.
A search warrant was obtained Feb. 1 and narcotics detectives found individually packaged amounts of meth, as well as narcotic paraphernalia.
Cherry tried to dispose of some narcotics upon detectives’ arrival at the residence, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Two children in the household, including the student, have been removed from the residence and placed with a family member.
