Police: Dollar General employee robs different branch

Was wearing store uniform during robbery

A 21-year-old Luling man was arrested after he allegedly robbed the Paul Maillard Dollar General while wearing a Dollar General uniform, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Gary C. Markey, of 903 Kinler St., who authorities say works at the Destrehan Dollar General, allegedly entered the Paul Maillard store at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 armed with a weapon.

“From what we understand, he visits the store regularly to talk to the employees there,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange said. “This time, he didn’t say anything to any of the employees and just waited for the right opportunity.”

Markey was disguised somewhat, LaGrange said, but he was still wearing a Dollar General uniform when he approached the store manager and demanded that he open up the cash drawers.

“He told them that if they didn’t do what he said, someone was going to get hurt,” LaGrange said.

The victim complied and Markey made off with $199.

LaGrange said that Markey has a very distinctive voice, and because he visits the store regularly, store employees knew he was the one who had robbed the store.

Markey was arrested at his home a little over an hour after reportedly committing the crime, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
