Pier 90 marina closes

Flood gate work blocks lake access

For many fishermen, the best way to get to Lake Cataouatche is to launch at Pier 90 and make the four-mile boat ride along Bayou Verret.

But on Monday, the Pier 90 boat launch was forced to close for a month while the Corps of Engineers installs flood gates on the bayou, which will block lake access, according to Pier 90 owner Courtney Mongrue.

The Pier 90 bar will remain open.

Fishermen will now have to find another way to access both Cataouatche and Lake Salvador. The nearest alternatives are the state park launch on Bayou Segnette in Westwego and the end of the road launch in Bayou Gauche.

“I’ll be launching in Westwego because of proximity,” Bass fisherman Ritchie Friloux said. “Fishermen in Paradis and Des Allemands will have to launch in Bayou Gauche.”
