Peanut Butter to feed hungry in St. Charles

Since 1993, St. Charles Parish Hospital has held an annual peanut butter drive to benefit the hungry in St. Charles Parish, and in their 22nd year, they’ve pick up a new partner.

“The residents of St. Charles Parish have made the peanut butter drive a wonderful success and have made the last 21 years an unparalleled achievement in the parish, while at the same time helping to feed many of the hungry in St. Charles Parish,” St. Charles Parish Hospital spokesman Quinn Landry said.

The hospital’s new partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank of St. Charles Parish connects the donated peanut butter with the non-profit’s five distribution points in the parish on the east and west banks. Collected jars of peanut butter will go to both Second Harvest and St. Charles Social Concerns, both of whom work to provide weekly and monthly food baskets.

“Peanut butter is a staple item in these baskets as it is high in protein and has a long shelf life,” Landry said.

After its start in 1993, the program has grown significantly. The first collection resulted in approximately 40 jars, while recent drives have accumulated between 500 and 600 jars, according to Landry.
