Patrol cars collide on River Road in Norco, deputy may have had seizure

Two St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s patrol cars collided on River Road in Norco and both drivers were “pretty banged up,” Sheriff Greg Champagne reports. Lt. Michael Bergeron was driving his squad car on River Road near Sirs Lane when he spotted another patrol car drifting into his lane from the opposite direction.

“Fortunately Bergeron was able to slow to less than 20 mph before the car driven by Deputy Jose Alvaranga collided with him head on,” Champagne says.

Alvaranga might have had a seizure, continues the sheriff.

“We are not sure exactly what caused Alvaranga to drift out of his lane and hit Bergeron,” he adds.

“Alvaranga blacked out and is undergoing tests to find out what happened to him.

“I’m just glad that both of our officers are doing okay.”

Bergeron was heading to a security detail on at the Bonnet Carre Spillway and Alvarenga was on a routine patrol at the time of the accident, reports say.

“It was a freak accident and I just thank God that both of them are doing okay,” Champagne says.
