Parish strives to pick up debris before Ike

Debris pickup began on Sept. 8 in St. Charles, and the parish hopes to have all of it off the streets soon because of the potential danger of Hurricane Ike.

“We are picking up as much debris as we can right now,” Renee Allemand, the parish’s public information officer, said. “Our hope is to have a majority of it out by Wednesday.”

The parish asks that residents be mindful of fire hydrants when placing trash or debris and also separate their debris from regular garbage. If Coastal Waste Services cannot reach perishable garbage because it is placed under debris, there will be a smell.

Also, the parish does not want residents to place their debris in ditches.
