Ormond Plantation will serve as backdrop for ABC series

Destrehan’s Ormond Plantation will serve as the backdrop for an episode of an ABC network drama that is being filmed in St. Charles Parish.

The series, “The Astronaut Wives Club,” is based on a bestselling non-fiction novel written by Lily Koppel. The book chronicles the experiences of the wives of nine astronauts who participated in the Apollo space program throughout the 1960s that culminated in the moon landing in 1972.

The ensemble TV series will focus on the relationships between the wives of the men who were chosen to take part in the first NASA space program.

Robin Priest, owner of Ormond Plantation, said scenes for the show were shot both inside and outside of the plantation.

“They came in and set up everything last week and the total shoot was done all day Thursday,” she said. “The entire cast was there.”

Priest said the plantation’s unique setting allowed the grounds to fill in for both Florida and Texas.

“They came in on Tuesday and started set design. It was really neat because one side of the plantation was Florida and the back side of the plantation was Texas.

“It was a lot of excitement for one day.”

The ABC series has been filming at St. Rose’s Quixote Studios since October and production is expected to last until February.

Quixote Studios has been closed to other productions throughout filming of “The Astronaut Wives Club.”

Ormond Plantation will reportedly appear in the final episode of the series. “The Astronaut Wives Club” stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Odette Annable, Zoe Boyle, Azure Parsons and Desmond Harrington.
