Operation Santa Paws seeks to lift spirits of shelter cats, dogs

Donations of toys, food accepted at any St. Charles Parish library

St. Charles Parish residents can help the adoption chances of an abused or abandoned shelter animal by donating toys, treats, food and supplies at any parish library.

The library is collecting the items as part of a nationwide program called Operation Santa Paws. Through the program, donated items will be delivered by volunteers to animals at the parish shelter. The toys, treats, food and supplies help improve the health and demeanor of those shelter pets, which increases their chances of adoption.

Lauren Pitz, spokeswoman for the library system, said the library is making more of an effort to be involved in the community. The library typically collects food through their Food for Fines program, but this is the first time they have collected items for the Humane Society.

“We thought it was a great thing to do and we’ve gotten a great response,” Pitz said. “When you are doing your holiday shopping, pick up a little something extra for a shelter animal. Animals play such a big role in so many people’s lives, and we want to help them find their forever homes.”

According to Operation Santa Paws, cats enjoy rolling toys such as plastic balls or other batting toys that can be hung from cage doors. Dogs tend to prefer items like the heavy-duty Kong rubber chew toy.

Other items that can be donated include dish washing detergent, peanut butter, dog and cat shampoo, dry and canned food, heating pads for infant animals and cleaning supplies.
