Norco woman killed in Hwy. 90 crash

Drifted off road at Melonie Street, struck tree

A 52-year-old Norco woman was killed after her car drifted off of Highway 90 in Boutte and hit a tree, according to the Louisiana State Police.

The crash occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on Friday when police say a 2000 Lincoln Town car driven by Cheryl Clay was traveling east on Highway 90 and drifted off the roadway at Melonie Street for unknown reasons. EMS rendered medical attention to Clay, however she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say that Clay was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and that impairment is not suspected. Toxicology results are pending the outcome of an autopsy.

Clay was a graduate of Destrehan High School and attended the University of New Orleans. She worked for Allstate Insurance Group for many years, according to her obituary.

The crash shocked many in the community who took to Facebook to express their sadness.

“Just heard a beautiful person was killed in an accident this morning – Cheryl Waguespack Clay,” Councilwoman Carolyn Schexnaydre wrote. “She was so sweet and friendly and will be missed dearly.

“My prayers go out to her family.”
