No major damage in library water leak

New branch shut for a day to contain underground leak

A water leak under the East Regional Library in Destrehan caused the closure of the building all day on Thursday but did not cause any major damage, according to Head Librarian Mary desBordes.

Because the leak occurred outside, desBordes said that the interior of the library was fine but that patrons couldn’t be allowed inside because water was shut off.

“To fix the leak, we had to shut off water to the whole building and we can’t have people inside without water,” she said. “”We’re really sorry that we couldn’t stay open, but it’s something that couldn’t be avoided.”

DesBordes added that a lot of the staff that usually works at the East Regional Library was sent to other branches in St. Charles Parish.

“The building itself is fine, we just have a big mud hole outside, but the library is back and open for business,” she said. “Sadly, these kinds of things happen when you are dealing with buildings.”
