New Sarpy man found guilty in connection with death

Accused of shooting man in head after argument

A 24-year-old New Sarpy man was convicted of manslaughter in connection with the April 2015 shooting death of a LaPlace man.

Sidney Smith, 24, of 925 E. Terrace St., will be sentenced Dec. 20 after a court-ordered pre-sentence investigation takes place.

According to witnesses, Smith got into an argument with Warren Sanders around 9 p.m. April 18 in the 800 block of East Terrance Street in New Sarpy. Smith was apparently upset that Sanders had expressed interest in his girlfriend, according to witnesses.

Smith fired a small caliber weapon, hitting Sanders in the abdomen and head, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives responded to the scene where Sanders, 28, was found lying unresponsive in a ditch.

Smith fled the scene and the Sheriff’s Office released a report to the media identifying him as a murder suspect presumed armed and dangerous.

Smith turned himself in 24 hours later.
