17 malnourished pit bulls found in home
A New Sarpy man who was arrested after 17 malnourished pit bull terriers were found in his home will not be able to own animals for three years after pleading guilty to three counts of animal cruelty.
Kevin Adams, of 837 E. Lawson St., was arrested on Nov. 22 after deputies responded to a call about drug activity. When deputies arrived at the home, they say they could smell marijuana and saw a marijuana cigarette. After Adams gave them consent to search the home, a deputy found bag of cocaine in the toilet.
They also discovered eight pit bull terrier puppies and nine adult dogs in the backyard.
Some of the pit bulls were extremely malnourished. None of them were registered and they didn’t have the rabies vaccine.
The pit bulls were seized by the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter. Angi Robert, animal control director, said they dogs were thin and full of hook worms. All of the dogs had old scarring and most had puncture wounds.
“I can’t say they were fighting them, but at some point these dogs were fighting amongst themselves or with other dogs,” she said.
The shelter was only able to save three puppies.In addition to pleading guilty to three counts of animal cruelty, Adams also pled guilty to possession of cocaine. He was sentenced to five years in jail, but his sentence was suspended. He was placed on active probation for three years and cannot own or possess an animal during that probation period.
