New lunch joint will open on River Road in Luling

Will serve burgers, po-boys, wraps

The former site of P.J.’s Po Boys in Luling will re-open in January as Fatty’s Shack, which will cater to a lunchtime crowd.

Fatty’s co-owners Lance Oncale and Sean Delaneuvile already operate two other Fatty’s locations in the region. Fatty’s Bar and Grill is located in Garyville and Fatty’s Main Street Grill is housed in LaPlace. Oncale said that business has grown at those locations based  almost exclusively on service to neighboring refineries and plants.

“We can’t handle ‘em in LaPlace,” Oncale said. “We’re getting too much business…that’s a very good problem.”

Oncale said he and Delaneuvile have been looking for a location in St. Charles Parish for “quite some time.” Unlike the other Fatty’s locations, the Luling location will emphasize lunch and won’t serve alcohol. Specialties  include po-boys, burgers cooked to order, shrimp, wraps and homemade onion rings.

The Luling location that Fatty’s will soon call home has seen a long rotation of businesses, including Riverside Tavern, the River Road Café and Paul’s Cajun Café.

Though Oncale said they are leasing the space at 13527 River Road, they are hoping to purchase the entire building, which includes Boogie’s Lounge next door.

Oncale asserts  that they have no plans for taking over Boogie’s.

“We just don’t like to rent,” Oncale said. “You lose money when your rent.”

Light renovations are currently being completed at the location. Oncale said the January opening is based on the approval of various permits.
