Nearly $3 million wing expansion gets approval

Library, 2 physical education classrooms and band room will be housed in wing

The St. Charles Parish School Board has accepted a $2.75 million bid to construct an addition to Luling Elementary.

“It worked out well, it came in right at budget,” said John Rome, executive director of physical plant services for the school district.

Rome said the contractor hopes to begin construction after the holidays, preliminarily moving supplies into position while classes are out for Christmas.

The new wing will add general-use facilities, including a library, two physical education classrooms and a band room. The funds were approved as part of a $45 million bond approved by voters in 2012.

Under the bond plan, Rome said, the district “had a priority to eliminate portables and create permanent structures” across the district.

Rome said that  the company that submitted the winning bid, Des Allemands-based Pintail Contracting LLC, recently completed renovations on R.J. Vial Elementary as well as other projects for the district.

“We’re very familiar with [Pintail’s] work and comfortable with the products they’ve provided us in the past,” Rome said.

Luling is only the latest of a number of construction projects on district schools that are in line with long-range plans. Projects include a $7.9 million “art wing” added to Destrehan High School, a new wing at Hahnville High School and renovations at Carver Early Learning Center.
