Was working as assistant D.A. to ease transition
After just over six months as an assistant district attorney, Harry Morel has retired from the office for good. Morel officially filed his retirement paperwork on Friday, Jan. 11.
Before his brief run as assistant district attorney, Morel ran the St. Charles Parish District Attorney’s Office for 33 years, but stepped down in order to avoid a conflict of interest when his daughter, Michelle Morel, launched a successful campaign as judge for the 29th Judicial District Court.
Morel was replaced by former state Senate President and current St. Charles Parish D.A. Joel Chaisson in June 2012. Chaisson kept Morel on as an assistant following his resignation from the elected post.
“It’s hard working where you were the boss, it is a little different. I had a good run. I finished up most of the things I was trying to do so I retired,” Morel said.
With his new found free time, Morel is going to focus on his family and household.
“I’m going to play with the grandkids, do work around the house,” Morel said. “I’m just going to take it easy.”
Chaisson said Morel’s tenure as assistant district attorney was planned as a temporary situation.
“It was always the plan for Mr. Morel to be on our staff during a transition phase and that he would retire within a year after I took office,” Chaisson said.
Morel said that both he and Chaisson felt the transition was complete.
“We figured we’d do it until the end of the year,” Morel said. “I talked to Joel last week about retiring.”
