Cupcake wars, chili cookoff and volleyball
More than 240 people representing 20 teams have already signed up to walk around the clock in the battle against cancer during this Saturday’s Relay for Life.
The event begins on March 29 at 3 p.m. at the West Bank Bridge Park in Luling and will end at midnight. Relay for Life is filled with fun activities that include music, horseshoes, volleyball, Zumba and performances by the Voodoo Elite cheerleaders and the Des Allemands Cajun Dancers.
Amateur chefs will battle it out during the relay in cupcake wars and a chili cookoff. Men will also fight for attention in the Mister Relay pageant by donning dresses. A car show will be held on the grounds and a fireworks display will wrap up the event.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a family-oriented fundraiser where participants walk relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams include coworkers, club members, family members and friends who have gathered donations prior to the eventAdmission to the relay is free and open to the public.
“We’ve all lost family members and friends to cancer. We are out here for caregivers, survivors and those that have passed,” Councilwoman Carolyn Schexnaydre, the Relay for Life chairwoman, said. “Cancer is something that we need to fight to show people that we are not giving up.”
One of the most important aspects of the relay is the Luminaria Ceremony, which will take place after sundown at 8 p.m. To honor the community’s cancer survivors and to remember those lost to the disease, survivors will circle the track rimmed with glowing luminaria while the names of survivors, those fighting cancer and those who have died due to cancer are read aloud.
“It’s a very touching and beautiful ceremony,” Schexnaydre said. “I look forward to Relay for Life on Saturday and invite everyone to come out.”
Funds raised at Relay For Life will enable the American Cancer Society to support local services and resources for cancer patients and their families. Funds also support critical cancer research and community education programs designed to teach people how to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
