Man who coerced minors for sex hangs himself

Accused of victimizing 8 girls

A man convicted of producing child pornography and coercing minors for sex hanged himself with the cord from a laundry bag while jailed in the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.

Matthew Pere, 33, of New Orleans was found hanging on the cord in his cell on Saturday, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to a call of an inmate suicide and administered medical aid but Pere did not respond.

Pere, who had been sentenced to 28 years in prison on Oct. 5, was alone in the cell, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The inmate was last observed alive by deputies just before 10 p.m. About an hour later, during another walk through, Pere was found unresponsive.

Several deputies and a nurse attempted to revive Pere until St. Charles Parish EMS arrived. They were unable to revive Pere, who was transported to the New Orleans Forensic Center for a post mortem examination.

Pere was arrested last December by an FBI task force investigating human trafficking and violent crimes against children.

According to court documents, Pere victimized eight girls between the ages of 12 and 17 whom he met on the Internet and social media.
