A River Parish Maintenance employee was killed on Wednesday while helping load steel cylinders onto a truck at the Shell Norco facility.
Michael Louque and another employee were near a flatbed truck at 10:45 a.m. while a forklift operator was loading two 16-foot-long cylinders onto the vehicle, according to River Parish Maintenance President Roger Landry.
One of the cylinders rolled off the truck onto Louque. The worker was rushed to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
Landry said investigators are still trying to determine what caused the cylinder to roll off the vehicle. He said the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office was on the scene yesterday and that officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are still investigating.
Louque had worked for River Parish Maintenance for 33 years. Lanrdy said this is the first serious accident at the company in their 43 years of operation.
Shell released a statement say that their thoughts and prayers are with Louque’s family, co-workers and friends.
