Man gets 12 years for attempted murder

Shot girlfriend 5 times in spillway before rushing her to hospital

A LaPlace man was sentenced to 12 years in jail after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder after shooting his then-girlfriend five times in the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old Roy McDaniel, of 1061 Whitlow Court, was driving back from Mississippi on April 23, 2007 with his girlfriend when the two got into a heated argument.

“The argument went on for some time and McDaniel eventually pulled over the car at the spillway and his girlfriend got out,” said Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange, Sheriff’s Office spokesman. “At this point McDaniel allegedly pulled out a gun and shot her multiple times.”

Police say that five bullets entered the victim’s body, with three hitting her in the left arm and one hitting her in the chest right above the heart. She was also struck in the stomach.

“After the shooting, McDaniel put her in the car and drove her to the River Parishes Hospital. She was then transported to University Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery,” LaGrange said.

He added that the victim likely survived the shooting because McDaniel rushed her to the nearest hospital.

“After dropping her off at the hospital, McDaniel fled the scene,” LaGrange said.

While McDaniel was on the run, he was arrested in Mississippi for a separate crime.

“He has been in a Mississippi jail since the shooting, and after he completed his sentence there for an unrelated crime he was extradited here to face his attempted murder charge,” he said.

McDaniel was booked into the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center on April 12, four years after the shooting occurred.
