A man convicted of producing child pornography and coercing minors for sex hung himself with the cord from a laundry bag in Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.
Matthew Pere, 33, was found hanging on the cord in his cell on Saturday (Oct. 14), according to the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a call of an inmate suicide and administered medical aid to Pere, but he did not respond.
Pere, who had been sentenced to 28 years in prison on Oct. 5, was alone in the cell, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The inmate was last observed alive by deputies just before 10 p.m., with the deputy speaking to him briefly during a security walk through.
About an hour later, during another walk through, Pere was found unresponsive.
Several deputies and a nurse attempted to revive Pere until St. Charles Parish EMS arrived. They were unable to revive him and he was transported to the New Orleans Forensic Center for a post mortem examination,
