Luling YMCA now open

… teens invited to after-school activities

The Luling YMCA opened its doors Aug. 27, for children parish-wide. The new facility, located at 737 Paul Maillard Rd., Suite D, features games, a computer lab, ping pong tables, and activities to keep kids busy, safe and out of trouble.

“We are accepting applications for teens age 13 through 18 years old to join the organization,” Lou Johnson, YMCA spokesman told the Herald-Guide.

“The cost per child is $25 for registration fee and $15 monthly,” he continued.

“Scholarships are available for those who qualify and will cover up to 80 percent of the costs.”

Anthony Coleman Jr., the diretor of the new center, said the kids will have supervision and will be able to do homework, relax, and have fun.

“We’re open from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday,” he continued.

“However, we do plan on having Saturday events, occassionally,” he told the Herald-Guide.

“We need volunteers and mentors to help us work with the kids,” he said.

“We plan on doing a lot more activities for the children in the community and volunteers are encouraged to help,” he continued.

“We’re also looking for teens to join the YMCA’s Young Leaders Club.”

The YMCA Leaders Club is a nationally recognized organization founded in 1885 designed to provide teens with volunteer opportunities in their community while teaching valuable leadership skills.

“It cost $60,000 to open this facility and we plan on opening one in St. John and St. James Parish, as soon as funding is available,” Johnson said.

“The center is great for our children and our parish,” Dr. Rodney Lafon, superintendent of St. Charles Parish schools said.

Residents who sign up to join the Luling YMCA have membership privileges to all of the organizations in Orleans Parish and the surrounding area.
