Luling man killed in Hwy. 90 collision

Was pulling out of Pier 90 parking lot

A 73-year-old Luling man was killed on Friday after he exited the Pier 90 parking lot and was hit by an SUV on Highway 90, according to state police.

Eric Marks was transported to St. Charles Parish Hospital with critical injuries and was later pronounced dead. Authorities suspect that he was impaired at the time of the crash.

According to the incident report, Marks exited the Pier 90 parking lot in a 2003 Toyota Corolla at 8:25 p.m. As the Toyota pulled into the right eastbound lane of Highway 90, it was struck by a 2005 Volkswagen SUV driven by Charles Johnson, 66, of New Orleans.

Johnson suffered moderate injuries and was transported to West Jefferson Medical Center.

Speed is not considered to be a factor in the crash. Blood test results are pending an autopsy.

According to his obituary, Marks served in the U. S. Navy and was a tugboat captain employed by Octopus Towing.
