Join parishwide cleanup effort

More than 150 parishioners have already signed up to help keep St. Charles clean during this weekend’s Trash Bash event.

Trash Bash is a bi-annual litter cleanup and recycling awareness event in which people are assigned to clean up certain areas across the parish. The event will be held on Saturday from 8-11:30 a.m.

“After three years of hosting Trash Bash events, we notice a huge improvement in how clean the parish looks,” said Renee Simpson, public information officer for the parish. “I think collecting trash and having residents visualize it as bags on the side of the road does a lot to educate people about just how prevalent the litter issue is in St. Charles Parish.”

Last spring more than 250 people volunteered for the event. They collected more than four tons of garbage over 57 miles of roadway as well as 25 bags of recyclable material, 23 tires, a fuel tank and scrap metal.

“We appreciate our volunteers so much for their commitment to presenting a beautiful parish and we hope to see more people pitch in,” Simpson said.

While the fall event does not feature an after-party like its spring counterpart, Simpson said it is very important to the community and is also a great way for students to gain service hours required by school or community organizations.

Parish President V.J. St. Pierre said the event is also a good opportunity for residents to clean up their own yards, especially around streets and drainage ditches or canals.
