Interviews set for Hahnville High School football top job

Fourteen candidates will interview to replace Lou Valdin who stepped down as head football coach at Hahnville High School last month for health reasons.

The position drew 50 applications after it was posted in early December and was narrowed down to 14 who will interview with a selection committee on Monday, Jan. 13 and Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Of that group two current HHS coaches, offensive coordinator Mike Silva and offensive line coach John Lambert, will interview.

The remaining 12 interviews will take place with coaches outside of the school system, including East Jefferson High School head coach Dominic Saltaformaggio.

Saltaformaggio led the East Jefferson Warriors to a 15-0 season in 2013 that included winning the 4A state championship with back-to-back wins against powerhouses Edna Karr in the championship and Neville in the semi-finals.

Other interviewees for the position are Wayne Stein (St. Charles Catholic defensive coordinator), Troy Borne (Lutcher assistant coach), Brett Beard (head coach at Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge), Malter Scobel (Hammond head coach), Michael Baiamonte (Pontchatoula athletic director and former head coach), Eric Collins (Pearl River Central head coach in Carriere, Miss.), Clinton Harrison (Belle Chasse head coach), Delphfrine Lee (former defensive back for the New York Jets and former defensive back coach at McNeese State University), Derek LaMothe (John Ehret defensive back coach and former head coach at O.P. Walker and L.B. Landry), Kerry Watkins (recently retired Canadian Football League veteran wide receiver) and Jon Laque.

The committee’s recommendation will go to the school board for consideration at school board meeting on Feb. 5. The next coach is currently slated to take over on March 10.
