Intense school shooting drill will take place at HHS Friday

There will be blood, gunfire and gunshot wounds at Hahnville High School in an attempt to get as real an experience possible at Friday’s training exercise.

“We’re trying to make it realistic,” said Cpl. James Grimaldi, spokesman for the St. Charles Sheriff’s Department.

The training exercise will begin at noon and run until about 4 p.m.

Grimaldi said the exercise is aimed at emphasizing on demonstrating the ability to implement an incident-command system, as well as integrated medical response to mass casualty incidents.

The joint exercise will involve the Sheriff’s office and St. Charles Parish School System, as well as St. Charles Parish EMS, St. Charles Hospital emergency room staff, local fire departments, Louisiana State Police, Kenner Police Department, St. Charles EOC, Dow Chemical, St. Charles Parish Rapid Assessment Team, Monsanto and Shell-Motiva, Grimaldi said.

The agencies involved in the drill already have procedures in place for a school shooting or other emergency event, but going through a realistic drill is the best way to train for such a tragic scenario.

According to Lt. Marlon Shuff, the exercise will consist of blank ammunition being fired, noises that may sound like small explosions, police vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances in and out of the area.

“This training is being conducted so our officers, fire personnel, medical responders, parish workers and school personnel can better respond to and protect the students and faculty of our schools,” Shuff said.

He also advised there might be more traffic around the school due to the exercise, although he said all possible will be done to avoid any inconvenience.
