St. Charles Parish Council fills Registrar of Voters vacancy
St. Charles Parish Council filled the vacancy of Registrar of Voters at its April 2, meeting.
Steve Sirmon, director of public information for the parish, was appointed to the position after a seven to one council vote.
“I have been working with the parish for several years now and I love my job and I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given,” Sirmon said.
Despite health concerns, Sirmon said he’s better and ready to take on his new position without complications caused by his illness.
“I had a bout with cancer and its been hard but thank God I made it through,”
“I survived the treatments and I’m doing fine.” he continued.
Sirmon, is replacing Janice Zeringue Hymel, who announced her retirement plans at the parish council meeting in March.
Sirmon’s first day in the office will be April 16.
As the registrar of voters, Sirmon will handle ballots for early voting in advance of election day before turning them over to the parish clerk of court, who supervises the election.
The registrar of voters supervises the voter rolls and is responsible for ensuring that only eligible people — those who are alive and live in the parish — remain on the rolls.
According to Louisiana’s guidelines, the registrar of voter’s position is essentially a lifetime appointment, barring malfeasance or inability to serve.
SC Parish residents pass millage
St. Charles Parish voters went to the polls Saturday and renewed two property millages – one that accounts for more than one-third of the public school general funding budget.
The first, a 42.97 mill renewal was passed with 2,347 votes and 78 percent of the voting public electing to renew the millage versus just 676 or 22 percent voting against it.
The other item on the ballot, a 10 year 4.9 mill renewal also passed easily with 2,319 voters or 77 percent electing to keep the millage that will be used for building maintenance and repairs. The number of people who voted against the maintenance millage was very similar to the general fund renewal with 683 voters or 23 percent against the renewal.
Both millages are expected to generate about $36 million combined over the next year for the St. Charles Parish school system..
