GRAND ISLE – A fire last weekend destroyed about 2,000 feet of the historic Caminada Pass fishing bridge at Grand Isle.
Authorities said a spark from electric lines along the bridge may have caused the fire, which burned for over six hours before being extinguished early Saturday.
Firefighters said creosote, a chemical preservative used to treat the wooden ties, likely fueled the blaze. The state-owned bridge was virtually destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The portion closest to Grand Isle was rebuilt and opened for fishing in July 2008.
