Herald-Guide wins 17 press association awards

The St. Charles Herald-Guide picked up 17 awards at the Louisiana Press Association’s annual luncheon, which was held in Lafayette.

On the editorial side, the paper finished second in Best Overall Sports Coverage, third in Best Lifestyles Coverage and was an honorable mention winner in the Best Front Page category.

The paper’s Web site finished second.

Individually, editor Jonathan Menard finished second in the Best News Story category for his article on three teens who escaped from their vehicle after it plunged into Airline Canal.

Menard also had two photos win awards, finishing second and getting an honorable mention in the Best Feature Photo category.

Thelezia Folse took home third place in the Best Breaking News Photo category.

“The Herald-Guide always strives to give our readers the information that they need, and it’s nice to be honored by the Louisiana Press Association for doing so,” Menard said. “However, we wouldn’t be able provide that information without the help of this wonderful community.”

In advertising, the paper won ten awards, including a first place in Staff Generated-Black & White Over 1/2 Page, which was designed by Alissa Zeringue.

Zeringue also earned second place in Best Retailer Ad, third place in Staff Generated-Black & White 1/2 Page or Over, and shared third place in the Best Ad Campaign category with Nick Hebert.

Hebert also won honorable mention in both Best Services Ad-Non-Retail and Staff Generated-Color Over 1/2 Page. He shared a third place award for Best Retailer Ad with Kevin Orgeron.

Orgeron won an individual award by finishing second in the Staff Generated-Color 1/2 Page or Under category.

“We are very disappointed in our showing this year,” said Brent Madere, advertising director. “The judges’ comments suggested our ad designs, concepts and layouts were excellent. However, they seemed to be difficult to please because only one entry won a first place award.”
