Hahnville teens survive crash with 18-wheeler

The driver and passenger of a 2009 Honda Accord received minor injuries after the vehicle they were in struck an 18-wheeler tractor trailer at the intersection of La. highways 3127 and 3160 in Hahnville, an area known for deadly crashes.

The vehicle’s driver, Victoria Sheppard, 18, with her sister, Savannah, both of Hahnville, was attempting to turn left onto Highway 3127 from Highway 3160 around 7:15 a.m. June 4, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheppard told police she made the turn, but didn’t see a second 18-wheeler in the center lane until impact.

Truck driver Salvador Laciura of Hammond said he was driving northbound on Highway 3127 approaching the intersection when he saw Sheppard’s vehicle approach his lane of traffic. Laciura attempted to avoid the collision by veering to the left. Sheppard’s vehicle then ran underneath the truck trailer from the side.

Sheppard, 18, reported injuries to her face and right knee, and her sister suffered injuries to her left hip and left hand.

Both were taken to St. Charles Parish Hospital, treated and released the same day.
