Greenwing chili cook-off offers kids fun-filled day

The second annual St. Charles Ducks Unlimited Greenwing Chili Cook-off will be held Saturday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. at Wetland Watchers Park in Norco. The event is the brainchild of Greenwing Chairman Russell Prima, who said it was put together with the intention to teach children skills that will allow them to better enjoy Louisiana’s Wetlands. Among the activities attendees can participate in are canoeing, archery, cast netting, baby alligator and snake presentations, critter ID, nature tail tours and casting. Children can participate in each activity as many times as they would like and can earn prizes donated by Cabelas.

“The thought process was really … well, I’ve got three boys, and I see through them where so many kids just want to play on the iPhone, the computer and stay inside,” Prima said. “This is a way to get them outside, enjoy some beautiful scenery and hopefully help them develop an appreciation for the outdoors.”

Of course, it is, after all, a cook-off as well. The event promises all the hot dogs and “Southern Style” chili you can eat.

Prima said that last year, close to 450 children attended the event, and that this year the event coordinators are aiming to up that number to 600.

He said those attending will be split into groups to participate in each of the activities. Upon successful completion of an activity, a participant will receive a raffle ticket, qualifying them to earn a prize via an end-of-day raffle.

While the Cook-off event technically ends at 4, the fun doesn’t. From 4-6 p.m., local musician Faith Becnel will perform live for attendees. Following that, Wetlands Watchers will hold a special walk through the “haunted” woods. Drama students from Destrehan High School will participate in that event to give it a spooky feel in the month of Halloween.

“They’re going to dress up and tell stories,” Prima said. “We’ve got a few different things planned, and it should make for a good time for everyone.”

Children ages 4 and under receive free admission. For ages 5-17, admission is $15, which includes a Greenwing membership, an event bracelet, a Ducks Unlimited membership, a Coastal Conservation Association membership and “Welcome Aboard” gifts. For ages 18 and up, entry is $5.
