Former St. Charles Parish DA released from prison

Harry Morel Jr., St. Charles Parish’s former district attorney who pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, completed his federal prison sentence and has been released from jail as of Aug. 6.

Morel’s release date was confirmed by U.S Probation and Pretrial Services.

As part of his sentence, Morel, 75, spent a portion of his time in a halfway house in New Orleans until his release. He will remain on supervised release for a year, but authorities could not be reached for comment on why his sentence was shortened.

Morel’s attorney Ralph Capitellli of Capitelli & Wicker of New Orleans could not be reached for comment as of press time.

Morel was accused of trading sexual favors with women for help on cases in Louisiana’s 29th Judicial District Court.

The former 33-year DA’s sentencing followed a three-year federal investigation that resulted in his three-year prison sentence on Aug. 17, 2016, which also included one year of probation and a $20,000 fine. Morel was sentenced and ordered to report to prison on Sept. 26, 2016.
