Former St. Charles Parish teacher Kimberly Naquin pleaded guilty today (Monday) to two counts related to her relationship with a then 16-year-old female student, but will not serve time in prison.
Naquin, 27, was sentenced to five years in prison for one count of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and student, and six months in prison on one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
Both jail sentences were dropped by 24th Judicial District Court Judge June Berry Darensburg in Jefferson Parish.
According to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s office, in accepting the guilty pleas, Darensburg suspended a five-year prison sentence for the felony (carnal knowledge of a juvenile) and ordered Naquin to serve five years of active probation. Darensburg suspended a six-month jail sentence for the misdemeanor (prohibited sexual contact between a teacher and student)and ordered her to serve six months of inactive probation.
“I guarantee you, if you violate any conditions of your probation, you will go to jail for five years,” Judge Darensburg told Naquin.
Naquin apologized to the victim and her parents, saying,”I betrayed your trust.”
The victim’s father testified that his daughter’s psychological distress was “the result of the selfish predatory actions of the teacher. School is supposed to be a safe place for children to mature and to learn, and this teacher has ruined that.”
Naquin was the student’s world history teacher and sought a relationship with the minor student one week after her 16th birthday, keeping her at school after class hours, the victim told the judge in impact testimony.
“I thought she was cool, because she paid special attention to me,” the victim testified.
The victim also said Naquin cried after sexual encounters and said she’d go to jail and threatened to kill herself. The victim added that it was only after therapy that she learned she was manipulated by her teacher, according to the DA’s office.
Naquin will be on active probation for five years and will have to register as a sex offender for 15 years. She also was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and stay away from the student.
According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s investigation, the student told authorities that the relationship began in September 2014 and lasted until August 2015.
The student advised most of the inappropriate contact occurred at the teacher’s prior residence in Kenner; however an undetermined amount of incidents occurred in St. Charles Parish at a Destrehan High School classroom and a Destrehan residence, according to investigators.
Upon learning a majority of the sexual acts occurred in Kenner, detectives with the Kenner Police Department were advised of the allegations and also initiated an investigation.
A warrant was obtained for Naquin’s arrest and she was later booked on charges of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and prohibited sexual conduct between a student and educator.
In January of 2016, Naquin was arrested and charged in St. Charles Parish and was also charged in Jefferson Parish by July.
Naquin taught Advanced Placement human geography and world geography at Destrehan High School.
She was at a Beta Club conference when she was arrested.
Naquin is the daughter of St. Charles Parish School Board member Dennis Naquin. Her father was board president at the time of her arrest.
