Former DHS football player shot to death in St. Rose

Fifth murder in St. Charles this year

A 23-year-old Destrehan High School graduate, who was a member of the school’s 2007 state championship football team, was found shot to death in St. Rose on Sunday.

At 9:15 p.m., St. Charles Parish deputies were dispatched to Third Street after receiving a call that someone was lying in the road. When they arrived, deputies found Ramal Ellis, of 243 Fourth St. in St. Rose, on the ground behind the Fifth African Baptist Church.

Ellis had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ellis, who went on to attend Southern University after graduating from Destrehan, served as backup to quarterback Jordan Jefferson during Destrehan’s title run in 2007.

So far, authorities have been unable to locate any witnesses who heard or saw anything prior to the discovery of Ellis’ body.

This is the fifth murder in St. Charles Parish this year and second homicide this month. In early November, Stanley Robinson Sr. was shot and killed in his home. His son, Stanley Robinson Jr., has been arrested in connection with the death.

In June, Quinn Coleman was shot in the chest after an argument in a Luling home. Darryl Davis, 21, was arrested and charged with the murder. In March, Deaneal Rachal was found shot to death in St. Rose. Like Ellis, he was discovered lying on the street with gunshot wounds. No one has been arrested in connection with that murder.

The first murder this year occurred in January when Michael McCray was shot to death in St. Rose while sitting in his car. Four people were arrested and charged in connection with the homicide.
